I like the idea but I was wondering if there would be some heat loss due to the metal holder. I also thought that maybe a piece of wood with a slot put in by either a saw kerf or a router would provide a bit more isolation.

That's another good thing about adding the foam weatherstrip, it not only cuts down air leaks, it isolates the aluminum frame from the vinyl window frame. As shown in the top right side of this pic.. Scans of the screen frames don't show them getting real cold, so it seems to be working. This morning it was 32F outside (64F inside) and I did some comparison scans on the walls and curtains. The walls all showed about 64 and curtains read 0.5 to 1.5 degrees lower. When I cranked up the Sanyo, the warmed up pretty fast, for a 16x18 room with over 100 square feet of glass.. |

Wow! Thank you Thermwell Products!!
On 10/27/11, I emailed the Thermwell Products about the defects found in their 48 in. x 25 ft. Clear Plastic.
Today, 10/31/11 the UPS guy dropped off a long package.. This stuff is packaged a little different than the rolls from HD.Easier to un-wrap. And, this stuff is really CLEAR!! It meets all my expectations for a good strong clear plastic.. Amazon.com: Thermwell Prods. Co. V4825/4 Vinyl Sheeting: Home Improvement "Nonyellowing, UV stabilized sheeting stays flexible at low temperatures. For indoor & outdoor uses." When I get this root-canal problem taken care of, I'll see how easy it is to pull out the Spline and install the new 'clear' plastic. Might be a couple of days. If the installed spline comes out real easy, I have a 100' roll of larger spline that should work. (But will take more work to install). My wife loves the new stuff, "So clear"! Wanted me to jump right on it.. I told her, it's on my short list.. Hey, maybe I can train her on DIY screens.?. |

New plastic looks a lot better.. Not a lot of marks and the wrinkles are smaller.
(The dark & light vertical lines in the middle of the left pane are the French door inside the room). Before: |

Looks a lot better from the pics. Nice to see a company stand behind its products.

A mild winter..
Now that the cold part of the winter is about over, I can report that our indoor-storms worked very well.
The mini-split in the den didn't run excessively this winter and kept the room warmer than it's ever been during the heating season. We have decided to leave these storms installed, to make cooling this summer just as efficient. When the cooling season kicks in, I'll be re-installing the two new Solar Screens, on the west side.. http://ecorenovator.org/forum/renova...n-project.html That's going to make cooling even more efficient.

Glad to hear they worked out for you. I always counsel winserts over crazy Windows.
That being said, a quote from Roert Riversong: "Am I anti passivehaus? Let's say I'm pro nature. I bet people living in old barn hoses keep their windows open more than people in passivahuses".

You can build your own with 1x2's & Frost king window plastic for about $1 sq ft.
Aluminum is about 2,500x more effective at thermal transmittance as wood; so its a bad choice for window frame or storm door. |
