Default Hi from Virginia

Hi everyone,

We are living in a 1949 house, which we are slowly improving. We don't have a budget for solar or wind power, so our focus is more on conservation. My husband spent the summer learning to install metal roofing (a skill we plan to take advantage of in the next couple of years) and has now returned to his previous job, applying spray foam insulation. I am a stay-home mother right now. We are avid gardeners. We are about to get some like-minded housemates to share work and expenses.

Welcome to the site!

Really, conservation is where it is at. If you conserve and insulate your house enough, you almost don't need any fancy green power source (solar, wind, etc) to be worlds ahead of the average household. The great thing about conservation is its cheap too. You'll notice the conservation forum is the most popular on EcoRenovator.

Welcome to the form. A "cheaper" way to be powered by renewable is to see if your utility company offers a 100% Renewable energy option. You just pay a cent or two more per kWh.

"has now returned to his previous job, applying spray foam insulation"??

That is also a great skill to have these days! Can he bring home some gear
on the weekends and do a little home insulating?
And maybe an employees discount on the chemicals?

Welcome aboard and be sure to check out the discussions about LED & CFL lighting..

The Geothermal area has a lot of info about home heating, heat pumps etc..

Cheers,
Rich
