Limit switches are installed to open the motor current flow,
when the mount reaches End-of-travel.
LED3X Solar Tracker Assembly

Diodes are installed across the switches contacts, so that reverse is possible,
after the month hits End-of-travel.

I used a satellite dish mover actuator unit, because it has build-in limit switches.

I had to buy a new model with 'limits', since my old unit didn't have switches.

Hi Xringer!

I read this thread and am curious if you are going to do more than resistance heating with the electricity after sorting out the mount.

Have you thought of adding serpentine cooling loops to the backside of PV panels? If you did this, you would get cooler panels (boosting efficiency), a high percentage of the total solar energy as the heat you are looking for now, and you would still keep the hard won "high energy content" electricity for DC uses or inverters.

BTW-as you know, that Occam (Ockham) guy is on to something!

Maybe your wife would like the panels on the roof if you intergrate some Sanyo HIT doublesided panels into a new portico

The tracker PV is connected to my back-up battery bank. 500w is over-kill for the bank,
so I've disconnected the actuator motor on the tracker.
The solar part of the back-up system (to power sump pumps) was basically an experiment that worked.
But, maybe I should have just used a 48v battery charger, with a 120vac wall plug..
(At least until we hit we hit Peak coal in 2025)..

I am getting pretty good use out of my 800w fixed mount PV. It's heating my hot water storage..

I'm now starting to think, the best use of PV is grid-tie.

I find most of my parts on Ebay. Those that come from China get here slow.
3 weeks is typical. US shippers average 1 week.
