One of those cheap "vacuum pumps" is inferior to just using a salvaged refrigerator compressor as a vacuum pump.

Agreed

A self installed system is NEVER going to qualify for any warranty.

The fridge pump idea is a good one, but it will be tough beating the scrappers most places, and the disposal rules don't let them be curbed in many areas ($50 fine here). And of course you'll be venting all that lovely high ozone / green house depleting gas too (because self installers have reclamation equipment right).
If you have the ability to re-use an old fridge/windows AC vacuum pump properly, I doubt needing a micron gauge or proper vacuum pump will be an issue.

Adhering to using a GFCI fused (over $100) disconnect for the unit, and a 3 pole disconnect between inner and outer units is also likely to be avoided by self installers - all manufacturer recommended.

When you're done using it as a vacuum pump, scrap it for a profit. Don't worry, if you ever need another, you'll be able to find one then. These things lurk in every dark corner.

Not using a micron gauge is like drinking poison, such as alcohol or antifreeze. Maybe there's too much atmosphere in the lines, maybe not. Maybe the water in there will turn to acid and slowly eat away at the guts of your brand new unit. Maybe your system will wake up with a hangover, then be cleaned out by its filter-dryer. Maybe it will run until just after the warranty runs out, slowly dying along the way. Then again, it may be just fine. The problem is, you'll never know something is wrong until it's too late.

In the US, HVAC systems do not require GFCI.

You are correct, I mixed my words; thanks

A GFCI outlet is required near the unit by code.
The internal 3pole disconnect is as well
The GFCI breaker to the unit is manufactured required, which would make it standard for a shop install to insure warranty, unless the shop is willing to eat it.

I put surge suppression on both lines too
