Yes its pretty flimsy situation because my wife paid most of the deposit so just ;ike the pos car she bought i told her the car would be a money pit and told same thing about the house. Shes pretty stubborn sometimes. So she didnt want to wait for me to be there for inspection i was at work and her and her dad didnt ask anything. All inspector said is hire this and that guy to look at specific problems. Nut ahe didnt.
Im kinda dragging this out and hoping that this would be a good lesson for her so she will listen next time when buing very expensive stuff that she doesnt know anything about.

Methinks the OP got something from his wife for Christmas to solve the problem. Any guesses what?

The OP stated the house was built in 1982, last I checked most areas outlawed using knob & tube well before that. I realize plenty of knob & tube still exists, especially in farm houses built in the late 1800's.

I suggest from experience, first thing you should do for your flooding basement is rent buy or hire a snake camera / sewer pipe drain inspection camera to inspect the drain pipes around your foundation and the pipe leading off the property.

Even with that swamp nearby with proper drainage your 10 inch below grade shallow basement should be maqnable and i suspect was until a back up or blockage occurred.

With the camera you can PINPOINT the problem and do very little digging, with no camera you will be forced to dig it all up.

speaking from more experience I will suggest that you re think your plan of punishing your wife for her purchase. Instead stand up and be supportive make the best of the situation - I suspect the house was cheap , which is a good starting point..
