Yes, he is but is out town. I remembered we installed one on my heat pump system back in 1985. Thats a long time ago for me to remember if it was actually necessary or was just for me to see if the fluid was flowing?

Far as I know, They do provide information as to the state of the refrigerant and can be handy when setting up and diagnosing a system. I think that measuring temperatures and pressures will get you the same information, although indirectly.

I'm just an amateur here, but my impression is that handy as it may be, the sight glass is not used as much as it once was.

Good question. Our property has more house than land. Plus the fact that her veggy garden is planted and the rest of yard is so close to the neighbors, we mav have to drill. There is no access to the back yard with a drilling truck, so DIY drilling will most likely need to take place. Or maybe we just sell and move to a place with more property?

Yeah, no room here for a pile that high. At the time we bought the house, bedrooms were more of a priority than the size of the lot.

If we do stay, I am going to have to find out what to do with the runoff from the drilling. Time to do somemore reading.

I do like the idea of using solar roof panels to heat the ground for storage.
