Do you use a programmable or manual thermostat?

I use programmable thermostats in my house. The minimal cost is easily made up by the warmth in the morning and energy savings throughout the day when I would otherwise forget to turn the heat down.

I recently had a "lifetime HVAC guy" try to tell me it takes more energy to cool down (summer) or heat up (winter) a house than it does to just leave it constant.
I smiled, but didn't argue. I know better. The worse the insulation in the home, the more it helps to use a programmable T-stat.

Yeah, I've gotten the same bit. I think (hope!) we all know better here. The lower the temperature differential, the less the heat loss, period.

My schedule is random enough that a programmable thermostat won't work very effectively. I simply turn the HVAC off when I'm away (or leave it set to 50F if it may go below freezing) and turn it back on when I need to.
