Tricone is not drilling but crashing the rock when it rotates. So you need a lot of weight to use it. My rig is about 1000 pounds and I chained my loader 2000lb and added another 600lb then I could use tricone. With 1" drill pipe this is not an option. This pipe will bend.... This is one of the reasons I used 2" pipe.

I think considering type of equipment chiphum uses the "best" option is chevron bit. It is a carbide type drag bit.

I think chiphum is too optimistic about drilling 100' deep. And what about grouting????

Here is a link about bits....

Bit Type and Its Influence on Penetration

I'm using a Step Drag with at most 200lbs down force and it seems to be working. I will add more weight a hopefully improve my rate as too slow right now. Going through limestone. If it was granite or a hard rock I wouldn't even think about it.

As for pumping grout I will use a cavity pump and use a fast flow compound to lower the viscousity.

Lowering the tremmie tube is pretty easy, but how do you plan on raising it from the depths?

i used 10 ft of 1 1/4 pipe it turns at 50rpm, 25rpm was to slow. it will turn 200rpm max.
i drilled 3 holes to 80 ft then hit big rock. it has 5in 4 blade bit. 3 winches on it, one
is 2500lb 12vdc to lift the head,a hand crank as a safety for the head if the cable brakes
4500lb 12vdc to pull out the pipe. i have. $800 in it. had to mod it after each drill to make it better, will try to post pics 8-30-12 when i drill the next hole it is hyd chain drive
i made most of it out of junk i have.

Wow, sounds like a very interesting rig you made. I'd really like to see some photos of that one, too.

Please take lots of photos, close-ups too, of the important mechanical assemblies.

I'm sure that there are a lot of hard core DIY folks who would like to know how you did it, so that they can build their own rigs.

Best of luck with your drilling progress!

Best,
