Bi-directional flow txvs. Why do I need check valves if these can flow backwards?
I saw a unit today that did heating and cooling. Not a single check valve in the system. Not even a bypass loop or anything. Are most txvs bi-directional?

Some tx valves have a built-in check valve. When they see reverse pressure, the check valve opens and lets the liquid through without dropping much pressure at all. You still need one for each heat exchanger, though. Electronic expansion valves are naturally bidirectional and don't need a check valve. The unit will have thermometer sensors on each hx to let the controller know what they are doing.

Ah ok that makes sense. So I misunderstood about what size check valve you said. You said liquid line, my mind instantly heard suction line. So I was think 7/8 but that is wrong. The liquid line is going to be 1/2", so I will grab a couple of them off ebay. I now have 2 of these balanced port txvs. NEW Carrier Bryant Payne A Coil TXV Valve Kit KSATX0701HSO FREE SHIPPING!
It is a 2 - 4 ton range txv. They are both externally equalized but that is ok, I really really liked them.

Also I just checked the water temp in the pond again, it has dropped to 48F........ That doesn't make much sense to me. Right now I have a general 2 wire aquarium thermometer running 170 feet into the pond. Something tells me that the long long wire is cause some issues. I will finish building the one wire arduino and test again.
But that did have me thinking, what temp is too low? I was thinking anything over 40F and more water flow could heat the house pretty good.

interesting video on vfds. he has a few more and even one with a 3 phase running his heat pump. thought it might help you in your vfd experiment

Hey guys been busy with the greenhouse heater and insulation that this project is being slow.
Here are the data logger readings from the bottom of the pond. The low is the past few days of no sun and snow. That is a once or twice a year thing here, I believe it is safe to say the 40F is as cold as the pond is going to get. So the geothermal is still a go! PHP Code:

No big rush here. Since you have developed the greenhouse system, which is fully dx outdoors, that's the best place to reap some heating rewards and collect data. Odds are high that the performance of this pump and dump system will mimic the dx system overall.

Memphis,
I see you are using one of those inexpensive ($15) RC-5 temperature/time data loggers. The reviews are mixed saying that the software interface is a bear. Some say impossible to use. Others love them. What to believe . . . I am thinking of ordering them to use to evaluate home heating system % on and off times (an indicator of system efficiency). Looks like you can set out one in a duct box, set it for one minute data collection and get a weeks worth of data for on and off heating times. Thanks in advance. Always best to get a review from a REAL person and not the contrived reviews found on e-bay or Amazon. Steve

These things are awesome! I got 3, they could not be easier to use. Just don't forget to erase the data each time because it will NOT write over data. Also every time to plug it into the computer it sets the clock.
Its easy to set the recording time and interval. Then just put the battery in and hit the play button. I double bag them and drop them to the bottom of the pond on a piece of 3/4" pvc. I have left them for over a week with zero water damage. I wouldn't put them in water without a bag or two on them though. I needed either this or some logger with a long wire. I couldn't find one, so this is the route I went, and I'm sure glad I did. BTW, amazon said it did not come with a battery, but mine did.

Thanks for the review - just ordered it on Amazon Prime. May be knocking on your "door" for help with software.
Looks like the actual unit is excellent - it is the software and/or download that people hate . . . If it works like they say, it will be an excellent tool. Steve
