This is why the manufacturers warranty the product with the degraded power output over 25 years.
Have you seen them degrade that much in the field?

I've had clients comment that their output has reduced some over time, even with proper cleaning but I have not done a study. It would be hard to do. I think that a panel with a known output needs to be put in a simulator after 8 or 10 years to know for sure. Each manufacturer has a published number BTW.

I know they publish numbers but this is done in a lab. The % loss they give must be conservative I am sure they don’t want to payout warranties. The real world is what we care about.

It appears this technique is actually being produced and sold , here are some exurbs and links.

note: they now mention a average of 20% efficiency

SunPower Corporation Supplies Fuji Furukawa with 494 Kilowatts of its High Efficiency Solar Panels

First Costco Store to Install a Rooftop Solar System in Japan

SAN JOSE, Calif., and TOKYO, Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR), a leading solar technology and energy services provider, today announced it has supplied 494 kilowatts of its high efficiency E20/327 solar panels to Fuji Furukawa Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (FFEC). FFEC has installed the solar panels at the Costco store located in Maebashi, Gunma, Japan, and the system is expected to commence operating next month. FFEC is acting as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for this project.

"We are pleased that our high efficiency E20/327 solar panels were selected by Costco for this rooftop installation, the first on a Costco store in Japan, and that our customer, FFEC was chosen to install them on this facility," said Howard Wenger, SunPower president, regions. "We've seen demand for solar in Japan continue to grow, and is now the second largest market for SunPower Corporation after the United States. We look forward to supplying our panels for more commercial installations like this one."

SunPower Corporation has also installed its high efficiency solar panels at U.S. Costco sites located in Arizona, California and New Jersey.

Integrated into the E20/327 Solar Panels by SunPower Corporation are its patented MaxeonŽ all-back contact solar cells. These cells are built on a solid copper foundation, making them extremely resistant to cracking, corrosion and stresses from temperature variation. With an average efficiency of 20.1 percent, the E20/327 panels deliver more power in the same amount of space and maximize system output with fewer panels installed.

E20/327 solar panels by SunPower Corporation are backed by the company's straightforward 25-year combined product and power warranty, which is 15 to 20 years longer than most. It offers the industry's lowest power degradation with more warranted energy, resulting in an unprecedented 87 percent power level at the end of 25 years.

Solar products by SunPower Corporation are branded in Japan under the Maxeon Solar™ name. The company will be exhibiting at PV Expo 2014 this week at the Tokyo Big Site in Stand #E46.

FFEC operates as a general facilities engineering and construction company, and is listed in Japan on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It designs plant electrical equipment and general air-conditioning, and constructs plumbing, building works and communication equipment.

The Most Efficient Solar

Not all solar panels are created equally. In fact, there’s a huge range in efficiency. So if you’re looking for efficient solar, look at the facts. SunPowerŽ solar cells currently hold the world record with up to 24 percent cell conversion efficiency. And that’s why SunPowerŽ solar panels deliver up to 50 percent more energy than conventional panels. How do we do it? With our revolutionary patented, all-back contact, SunPowerŽ MaxeonŽ solar cell technology.

Efficient Solar Cells Capture the Most Light

The front of the SunPower solar cell captures significantly more light than any other solar cells on the market—even in lowlight conditions. That’s because:

There are no metal gridlines on the surface to block the light
We use only the best, premium silicon inside our solar cells
Our wider metal contacts conduct more electrical current
A backside mirror reflects more light back into the cell.
