Sadly, in many areas of Colorado, water use rights trump even collecting water from your rooftop. In general, water use rights are not conveyed to a new owner, unless a transfer of 40 acres or more is done. Thus the number of 39.5 acre parcels listed for sale,

I am aware of a person that raises llamas (three to be specific). The offending beasts were seen drinking out of a stream and now (gasp!), the owners were fined for abusing the documented water rights.

Now you may ask, just how much water does a llama drink compared to daily evaporation in that section of stream? Ahh, evaporation is included in case law and you can't argue that point.

Furthermore, even collecting the rainfall from your roof (if you don't have water rights) can and has been subject to lawsuits from the downstream water right holders.

Now, what happens if you pee in the stream?
