We had a flat tar and gravel roof in hawaii. Very quiet even when hurricane Eva hit. Bad part is they decided to re roof it the day we moved in. Really liked the cool vertical lift dump drunk they used to dump the gravel on the roof. Those houses have since had conventional framed roofs put on them and solar panels.

Nearly every house in my neighborhood (all built in the early 1960's) had a tar & gravel roof. Those survived hurricanes like nobody's business. (my parents have the last remaining tar & gravel roof in the neighborhood). These days, 4 out of 5 houses in my neighborhood have asphalt shingle roofs. I'm still finding chunks of my neighbor's shingles in my yard from our last storm in 2006. His shingles were 18 years old in 2006. He now has a Decra metal roof, 2 years newer than mine.
