Did you get the unit working?

In the origional post , I think it was stated that the unit came with R-22 ? That would lead me to believe it contains mineral oil ?

Then , towards the end , it was stated that R-134a was introduced into the system ? I thought R-134a & mineral oil were forbidden ?

I soldered / brazed a service port into the low pressure side of a window unit . I used Sil-Fos . Poked a hole into the copper line with an ice pick .

Vacuumed it down and shot some R-22 gas into it . Started working .

God bless
Wyr

Congratulations! It looks like the spirits and gremlins that inhabit the world of vapor compression machines were on your side.

I still think you should make something else out of it... there are so many ways that they could be improved.

May the Goddess of Improved Forms be with you and inspire you to make something really cool.

Hey guys, sorry for no update since then, been busy with other projects. I was able to fill it with R-134A and it worked...until it all leaked out again. Near as I could tell there was a leak somewhere in the condenser but I couldn't find it no matter how much soapy water I sprayed on it so I guess it was somewhere among the fins and copper lines...oh well, I gave up on that unit and let my father have it for scrap. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for potential fixer uppers on Craigslist at the beginning of this summer. I just don't have the skills for what would have been needed to fix up the unit I started out with at the beginning of my thread. I did have fun learning a little more about refrigeration though in the mean time.
