Default DIY Nest thermostat

A DIY "Nest" like thermostat has been built featuring a Spark Wifi chip and powered by Arduino. It is a new open source project with good early results. I just saw this artical on Geek.com linked above and wanted to share here.

That is very cool. Thanks for posting.

If I didn't already have my cybetstat themostat, I'd look into making one of those. I really like having my thermostat available anywhere I have an internet connection (which is basically everywhere with my phone). For example, last night I didn't go home, so I dropped the temp to 50F when I left for work. This afternoon when I go home, I'll kick up the temp before I get there and come home to a nice warm house, and have saved a bunch of energy in the process (its 10F out atm). I could have left my house at 50F with my old thermostat, but I would have had to come home to a 50F house and it would have taken 3-4 hours to get up to the 70F I keep it when I'm home and awake.

I'd call it "The Zest Self Enlightening Thermostat"

Does it use the Nest portal to control temps?

Nope, spark cloud services and/or a local server of your construction. Due to the open-source nature of this project, only the framework is built. Who it talks to or receives orders from is up to the builder.

What is "Nest" about this thermostat other than the round shape? What features does it have over other low cost solutions such as Cyberstat?
