Someone here did a teardown and it uses a refrigerator compressor. Which means the efficiency won't be as good as with an A/C compressor and it would be slow at heating water.

the geospring is a hybrid unit. When it goes into "recovery" mode, the compressor shuts down and the sand hog elements take over. During this time, you burn lots of electricity to try to keep the tank hot. Once the water warms up, it goes back into "energy star" mode. So the time it saves you the most energy is while you're not using hot water (a lot of the time), or when you take a 3 minute shower (habits determine) or wash dishes.
By the way, there is no way to force the unit to switch modes, it's too smart. You just set the tstat and away it goes. Last edited by jeff5may; 03-12-14 at 06:12 PM.. |

I thought that when you turned it to heat pump only it would only use the heat pump. Thats just to bad i had thought about getting one with a heat pump being i dont have a clue how to make a heat pump water heater.

Found this pic on adeno
What if you put it into heat pump only instead of hybrid mode so it still would use the heating elements ?

I've made up my mind: I am going to hunt down parts and build one of these. I was just asked to swap out a 40 gallon electric water heater because one of the pipe threads has a leak at the plastic pex fitting! Reasoning is this: it's almost 10 years old, so this must be a sign of things to come. No joke.
With a donated water heater and a couple of window units sitting in line, I believe I can tackle one of these for under $100. |

Is that an Ethernet port on the front?
