I believe it says 500 mile on one gallon per ton. Which is still impressive but their talking about thousands or hundreds of thousands of tons.

As I sat in traffic waiting today for a FEC train to drop a few cars on a siding, I thought to myself: "Ok, so a train moves a ton of freight 500 miles on a gallon, but how many gallons of fuel are wasted by cars sitting in traffic waiting at lights like this every day?"

The only cars that are wasting gas are the ones which did not turn their engines off.
