I got the car again. This time it was to fix some electrical gremlins. While I was at it, I took at look at the A/C again. I took a look at the connection I knew was leaking. I removed the bolt holding it together and noticed a big 'ol crack around the mounting flange. I attempted to remove the line and this inevitably happened (see pic below). I have a new part on order and should have it tonight. Sure hope it holds a vacuum now!

That doesn't look like the line you changed last. I thought you were getting leaks out of the new line. Doh!

Alright, I vacuumed the car last night and left the gauge set on it. This morning everything looked good (as good as it can without a micron gauge).





So I took these and hooked them up. I started the engine, turned on the A/C and fan. I closed the hot side, opened the low and introduced the refrigerant.







It seemed to take about half of the can (can is 12oz). Then... nothing. I don't think the compressor kicked in at all, and it certainly isn't cycling. Here is how the pressures are looking now. It appears the pressure have equalized on both sides of the system. I'm guessing I need to get the compressor running at this point. The fuses are good and I swapped the A/C relay with another to make sure that wasn't the problem.

Sounds like the low pressure switch / sensor is not satisfied . I do not know what it is set at ?

Now , what I try to do is to is vacuum the system & then charge , by weight , with liquid , from a large jug of R134a ( purchased at Sam's club ) .

This fills with liquid , initially . When it starts evaporating inside the system . Raising the pressure .

Something else you might do is warm the small can of R134a , to raise the pressure .

I ended up hard wiring the A/C relay to make sure it was sending power to the compressor clutch. The clutch still didn't turn on. So, I pulled the plug and tested it. Sure enough, its getting 12V power. Looks like the clutch is bad.

Can you ever service just the clutch, or is the clutch normally replaced with the compressor as one unit?

Yes you can service the A/C clutch on older GM cars . Do not know about your Saturn ?

Check online at the local parts store web site to see if you find clutch parts .

Then look for you tube videos to show you how to do it .

The older GM clutches , if the clutch gap is too wide , it will not work properly . You may need to check the resistance of the electromagnet ? And if it is creating any magnetism when powered with 12 VDC .

Thanks. I checked the coil resistance and its around 17 megaohms! Looks like that is the problem. I'll see if I can pull it and replace it.

My tool set for removing the clutch on older GM compressors , looks something like this

A C Compressor Clutch Hub Remover Installer Puller Tool Air Conditioning AC | eBay

You can " borrow " it at Advance , AutoZone or Reilly auto parts by leaving a deposit = to the sale price . With a refund when you bring it back .

Did not find the clutch coil at the ususl places . Did find this , do not know if it fits your car ?
