Interesting! So these wouldn't be air-tight? Top and bottom on a rail, but sides open, maybe flush against the window frame, but not tacked down in any way? I wonder what happens in a high wind? My windows, alas, are crank-open-out, so this wouldn't work for me.

Edit- NVM, I just noticed you're looking for heat gain

I've been thinking about doing something similar and have been hung up about whether to do external roll up shades, like these...

Shade Cloth DIY Patio-Enclosures

Or the external window tint like this...

Either way though, both solutions look feasible.
