Default Swimming Pool Heater- Heat Pump 55 k BTU

Swimming Pool Heater- Electric Heat PumP-SMALL 55 k BTU - eBay (item 350306094853 end time Apr-16-10 20:08:03 PDT)

COP= 5.8 ??

http://www.fibropool.com/Support/Fib...r%20manual.pdf

I wonder if this thing will work when it's really cold outside?

If it does, this unit might be a good foundation for building a home heating system on..

If nothing else, this might make a good summertime hot water heater.
The cost of this unit is about the same as a Rheem heat pump hot water heater at Home Depot..

It should make tons of hot water!

I had no idea there were so many ASHP pool heaters around..

The swimming pool heater will work when it's coold outside. That's the purpose of the swimming pool heater. Even if it's not cold outside, as long as you want to get hot on the pool, just use it.

I don't mean cool, I mean cold, below freezing. Like 10 deg F.

If you plan to heat your home with an Air source heat pump, you have to plan for near worse case scenario.

I wonder if these things have inverter technology, like the mini-split ASHPs?

I like this one.. Geyser Installation Video on Vimeo

But, the BTU output of these things are not very high. Not for space heating.

Suspicious bells should be going off when you read "COP= 5.8" for an ASHP.

COP = 5.8 is what you'd expect from the best GSHP.

According the the Carnot Efficiency Theorem, efficiency goes up when the delta T is low and efficiency is low when delta T is high.

Swimming pools have a pretty low temperature, compared to hot water heaters. Can you imagine diving into a pool that is 120 degrees?

It probably would make a good house heater, or a good DHW heater, but the efficiency wouldn't be anything like 5.8.

I have no idea if the specs are accurate, but the hardware seems to be there.
If you could get one cheap, it might be worth a try for space heating.
Not much for a DIYer to do. Just the the loops. Find some heat and pump it indoors..

It's a good idea, but this is probably not the product.

Spec Sheet.

I took a casual look through some product literature and thought I saw that the unit was good for air temps down to 38 F.

If you can find that the unit is good to zero or sub zero, it might be useful.

But the COP will still not be anything like 5.8. That figure is for warming pools when the air is warmish.

Default 38dF isn't too good for most states.. :(

Well, it was just a shot in the dark..

An idea that maybe someone living in the southernmost tip of Texas might find interesting.
