The crankcase heater is probably triac-controlled so even that won't be a linear load.

It might even be using DC with PWM.. Or a relay.

The Elite unit was only £47.74 GBP. It will be winging it's way across the Atlantic soon..

I think it would use a triac because it's the cheapest way to get variable power.

I haven't a clue. It could be running full 230VAC and using the Compressor thermistor to signal shut off.

I would really like to see the schematics of those two PCBs..

That could be the case. I've noticed the similar 18,000 BTU Sanyo does
not even have a Crankcase heating element..

So, maybe it's only 20 or 30 watts being used..?.
