surplus city is an awesome place to deal with! I have bought many items from them. I have nothing bad to say at all. Quick shipper, knowledgeable phone support staff, awesome prices. If you would rather deal directly with them, their website often has better prices than their ebay listings. You have to know what you're looking for, though. Sometimes the descriptions are not all that robust.

Keep in mind that the main cost for a geothermal setup is not the unit itself, but the installation of the ground loops. DIY can really save a bundle there.

How to reduce loop installation/excavation cost- Example.

The volume of 4 trenches 100 feet long, 3 feet wide and 6 feet deep are equal to 7200 cubic feet.
The volume of one trench 20 feet long, 3 feet wide and 6 feet deep is equal to 360 cubic feet.
Total: 7200+ 360 = 7560 cubic feet:

In addition we have to keep in mind an excavator productivity - about 3,000 cubic feet per hour.

So: do your homework/calculation, shop around and ask contractors to be reasonable.
In my area contractors charge: $75-$80 per hour for a tractor/backhoe and $100 per hour for the tracked excavator. Plus transportation (delivery) cost if jobs are small.

Notes and recommendations:
- firstly insulate your house, install energy efficient doors and windows. Get rebates and tax credits. For the well insulated house you will need less BTUs (lower GHP cost, lower loop installation cost)
- not all Loop installers are certified by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association. and do not have specialized training from the manufacturers of GHPs(Geothermal Heat Pumps)/ GSHPs (Ground Source Heat Pumps)
IGSHPA - Down to Earth Energy
- as taxpayers we may claim a federal tax credit of 30% of qualified expenditures (including loop installation).
"Qualified geothermal heat pump property costs. Qualified geothermal heat pump property costs are costs for qualified geothermal heat pump property installed on or in connection with your home located in the United States. Qualified geothermal heat pump property is any
equipment that uses the ground or ground water as a thermal energy source to heat your home or as a thermal energy sink to cool your home. To qualify for the credit, the geothermal heat pump property must meet the requirements of the Energy Star program that are in effect at the time of purchase. The home does not have to be your main home." http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5695.pdf
- there is no maximum credit for systems placed in service after 2008
- check your local (State) credits and rebates too.

If you don't do it yourself, you will have half a dozen pockets to pad with labor cost. $100 a day to show up, then at least $50 per hour per guy. Plus an inspector or three. If you're not very spry or handy, it's worth it. Your system may be warranted for additional charge (or not). When things go wrong, you will have someone to call (maybe free in warranty period).

If you are spry, handy, daring, and brave, you may save more money by doing your own work. Planning and assembly required. No warranty to speak of, and if something goes wrong, you're the man. Using some of the money not spent, you may overbuild the system to vastly outperform a contract-bid job. Your mileage may vary.

I agree with you partially.

Sometimes you have to pay to get sufficient rebates and to keep manufacturer's warranty.
Just two examples:
- in my area you can get rebates for GHPs if they are installed by a member of Trade Ally: "Central Hudson Gas & Electric‘s Home Energy SavingsCentral Program provides rebates to residential customers for installing high efficiency HVAC equipment that meets program requirements. Equipment must be installed by a participating SavingsCentral Trade Ally" http://www.savingscentral.com/pdf/Re...ebate_Form.pdf
There is only one exception for the Hybrid water heaters: "All qualifying units can be installed by a SavingsCentral Trade Ally or yourself. All self-installs will be inspected by a Central Hudson representative." (my case)
- modern two-stage scroll compressor are too costly. And without warranty you will pay for replacement compressor from your pocket.
