Default Adding additional insulation to seel entry door

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or ideas about adding additional insulation to a seel entry door? I'm considering doing this to our basement door; adding another 1.5 or 2" to the outside with foam adhesive and possibly vinyl bolts. Then maybe wrapping with aluminum coil. The only pitfall I can think of is handle length and the thick door rubbing on the jamb (I'd make the foam 3/8" smaller on both sides essentially looking like a rabbet and a place for additional weatherstripping).

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Thanks!
