Having trouble posting a graph I created in MS Excell. Tried the above advice for posting a picture. Replied "invalid file".

No, just an .xlsx standard file.

If you attach the excel file you won't be able to show an image, but others can download your file. If you want to show the graph, you need to take a screen shot of the chart (print screen button or snipping tool and paste into paint) and save it as an jpg or something. Then you can attach that and put it into the post.

A few more points that have not been mentioned:

CENTERING_AN_IMAGE: After you follow Daox's instructions at the beginning of this thread you will get a string of characters that look a bit like HTML. If you highlight that string, and click the 'text centering' icon, your image will be centered in your post.
IMAGE_SIZE: Many of the images that are being posted are unnecessarily huge, and their file size does not add to the usefulness of the image, and take longer to load, and place a greater burden on the server. Of course, there are other images that really do benefit from, and require the detail. At least on my screen, with my browser, the default image width before it is resized is 640 pixels wide. So, assuming that this is the general case, those images that don't need the detail, should be resized to 640 width or smaller before up loading. The image that is down-sized by the robot will not be as sharp in the 'down-sized' view, as a pre-sized image (=< 640 pixels wide). With this in mind, I have my '640 width pixel resizing routine' down to a few brief key-strokes.

This is unfortunate, because certain line-art (charts, drawings, colors with no shading, grey-tone with no shading, etc) are less clearly rendered in jpg, and have a larger file size that a GIF or PNG file would. However the image manager robot in this software doesn't seem to have the ability to leave well enough alone.
