Very interesting reading, but I fear you are right - the method is probably too expensive - yet - for household use.

It states it can turn on and off as often as desired (i.e. every time you open the tap, then maybe x seconds after flow stops), AND it lasts for 30000 hours. 30000 hours of water flow is a two digit year life, if not more.

About the LED technology - are you saying that UV-C LED lamps are on the way? As stated in the article - hot lamps increase the amount of sediment left on the quarts, meaning it needs to be cleaned more often. A lower temperature means less cleaning. Bacteria and virus must be nuked, but not baked, as the UV-C light destroys the DNA of the bacteria, disabling their reproduction.

UV-C LEDs with enough output to deactivate bacteria are in the works. They will change the face of UV disinfection without a doubt.

I am reading about it right now. I have seen UV LEDs at 260nm, but they are ... about 300+ USD a PIECE. I wonder how many of these are required for a flow of up to 1 gallon pr minute? Can they turn on instantly? Are they OK with infinite cycles, and what is their expected service life?

300 USD is a steal, if one is enough - but if it takes, say, 20 diodes to have enough zapp, then it's a different story (!!!)

As they fall in price, they will be quite widespread used for disinfection.

UV-C tubes might be cheap for the power, BUT 1) They degrade 2) They use a lot of power (cannot be cycled), 3) They fail as they like, without warning.

So even if LEDs are (still) expensive @ 260 nm, it does not matter as much, if they use less electricity (can be cycled), forms less film on lens (much lower operating temperature), and can be made to run only when there is flow.

Brilliant, this is my solution - depending on those questions above, how they are answered ...

I would guess that diode manufactures are about 5 years from a reasonable product, then UV system manufactures will drag their feet another 5 before we see something on the shelf.

Hey, is this DIY or is it DIY?

I am going to get these diodes (if I can get them at an OK price, and the specs are as I want) and make my OWN filter.

Well sir, I commend you.
I have change my drawing a bit to better show my thoughts for a tube style lamp. As you have infinite dose of UV you wouldn't have to be too concerned if you exceed the max flow of the system while you are drawing water.

Thanks, Pinhead. Would I go back to the original one you sent, or are you uploading a new one?

Those UV LEDs look interesting, I am going to look more into those ... need some questions answered first though.

Check out this link. I've used Aliexpress before. Standard shipping takes a couple of weeks, but Express mail is only a couple of days.

Add the 3w's and replace the spaces with forward slashes. I can't post url's yet.
