Default Heat pump water heater modification.

Hi I have a GE geothermal heat pump water heater. I'm hooking up a water / freon heat exchanger to it. I'll be installing it in between the expansion valve and the evaporator. I noticed that the freon feeds into the evaporator at the bottom and exits out the top. Does anybody know if it matters if I mount the heat exchanger above or below the evaporator inlet line , and if it matters if the freon is fed into the top or bottom of the heat exchanger?
Thanks
