So any recommendations for batteries for use with this motor? Should I just use 4 regular car batteries to get 48v? Would marine deep cycle batteries be any better or last longer? I'd like to be able to mow for at least 1 hour per charge. 2 hours would be even nicer. I have a lot of grass to mow.

If you are using lead-acid Golf Cart batteries will handle the cycling the best. Marine deep-cycles are a small step up from regular car batteries and won't last too long when deeply cycled.

1 hour of mowing is no small task. With my 48V mower I have four 12V 150Ah (which is very high for a 12V) lead acid batteries. They probably provide me with 30-40 minutes of run time to 50% dod (depth of discharge). With lead you don't really want to take them down much farther than that because doing so reduces the number of cycles you get out of them. So, in order to get 1hr of run time I'd probably recommend going with eight 6V batteries. You can get 6V batteries rated for 225Ah and that would probably get you what you want.

What would I need in order to convert 110v AC into 48v DC for use in this project? Still toying with the idea of a having a diesel generator power the electric motor in the interests of being able to mow the entire yard in one go and in having a backup generator on hand for other uses.

That contactor will work. If you want to save some money you might check ebay for contactors from a forklift. That is what I am using in my mower. Just pay attention to the coil voltage. I am using a contactor with a 12V coil, but its no an issue since I have a charger for each battery. If you had a 48V charger that coil would unbalance the pack over time.
I think you should either go battery or diesel. Doing a combination is not only much more expensive, but also much more complex and less efficient.

Yeah, I'm thinking the diesel generator would be instead of doing batteries, not both. The diesel generator would have 3 benefits for me:
1) Able to mow our entire spread in 1 go. 2) Not have a bunch of money/energy tied up in batteries on the mower. 3) I'd have a generator to run other stuff, when needed. |
