I don't have much faith in any company promoting vertical axis roof mounted wind turbines, as I haven't ever seen one that produces usable power as it spins. They can be decorative, though. There are reputable companies making AC PV panels, such as Enertech, and they do seem to work as the promotions say (according to a friend who has been using them for awhile.)

I saw the web site for SpinRay Energy and it looks good.(thanks Chooch) but WisJim I did not find, other than the one from china, the one for Enertech. Where did your friend get his panels from? I am just starting to look for AC Panels.

I should have said Exeltech instead of Enertech. I was working on a wind project and had just looked up the Enertech site. Exeltech is a manufacturer of premium power inverters, BBS, rack systems, and grid-tie systems

Question for any or all of you:

I have a 9.9 kW system broken into three separate "systems" on three separate inverters. The panels are 185w sharp and they go to A fronius inverter (3 strings of 8 = 24) a sunny boy (1 string of 11) and a Sharp SunVista (1 string of 19). Now, I am interested in installing an marine selector switch below the DC disconnect for the sunnyboy. When the grid works, i leave it (except to charge the batteries - see below).

So, when the grid goes down, i will disconnect from the grid and switch the sunnyboy to a sine wave inverter, which will have a charge controller and marine batteries. That, in-turn, will cause the panel to energize which will cause the two remaining inverters to begin operating. As they produce (over produce), the excess will go to a "dump", as an outlet.

I understand that there will be times when I will have to disconnect from the grid, to charge the batteries (for the long periods of time the grid doesn't go down)

Does this make sense to you?

You might want to check out Grid Tie and Grid Interactive Systems
Those guys should be able to give you some high quality information.

I've looked at how GTIs work in the past, and using them off-grid can be problematic.
With 3 or 4 kw of PV connected to a GTI, that power will normally be used in your house and the excess will be absorbed into the grid. (Your neighborhood load).

But, if you don't have the grid, and your loads are only 2 kw, where does the rest of that PV power go?

If your GTI isn't real smart, it might crank up it's voltage to try to dump all it's PV power to the "grid".
But since there is no grid, it needs to ignore some of the PV power and take just what you need..

I know there are new Outback GT boxes that will run off grid.
But they aren't real cheap...

That is what I am concerned about. I am hoping the "dump", coupled with the charge controller will take care of it. This is an idea in progress. Seems to me, If my house has a draw, the inverted a/c will go into my panel and, like you said, when my draw is less that what is produced, it will have no place to go and if the batteries are charged there is a problem. I have to work the "dump" into this equation, to burn the extra. I will research your link and thank you for your reply.

The wind power guys use Dump loads all the time. The wind keeps on blowing after the bank is charged up..
So, many of them use a very large resistor, and some dump to an electric hot water heater.

My newer 800w array has not been used with inverters very much at all.
I've been using those 800 watts to heat water.
Wasteful I know, but it does help out with the hot water (abt 2400 BTUh).
