Smartphone Battery Life Could Dramatically Improve With New Invention
We're on the lookout for a smartphone and energy efficiency is among our priorities. So while searching I found this:
Smartphone Battery Life Could Dramatically Improve With New Invention It's basically reprogramming the phone to slow down its clock while in idle mode, allowing up to 44% energy savings. Pretty cool, and I'm surprised that it isn't implemented by default. I hope this becomes standard soon.

Yeah, power saving software is such an easy area for improvement. The hardware costs are nothing at all. You just pay your programmers a bit more to write the code. Its been around for ages I'm not sure why its not taken advantage of more.

This is not slowing the phones clock speed to save power that is done on most phones it is slowing the speed of the wifi and cell signal but still allowing it to know when it is receiving something it needs like a call.

Very cool. It's a good idea to turn things off/slow them down when you don't need them. I just found someone who did something like this for android (you need a rooted phone though)here. It switches to 2G (uses less battery) when the screen is off and turns 3G on when the screen is on.
