Default engine noise

hi
I have a 2001 john deere gator 4 x 2 with a 10hp single cylider air cooled kawaski motor and about 500 hrs. When cool the motor sounds fine but when hot (10-15 minutes) it sounds like it is going to fly apart, nasty raddling/shakens/slaping sounds with less power. When cooled it sounds fine again. Oil is fine and changed regularly.
any ideas what could be the problem and if it's rebuildable?
thanks
gary

when in doubt: always check the compression.

Then, we can go from there.

Try adding some Lucas oil treatment about 20%, imo, you squeeze the last work out of it, then put in a new engine.
