I don't have any hands on experience with micro hydro, but there's a very good book, "The Renewable Energy Handbook" by William Kemp. It's a Canadian book by a Canadian author, and it features a lengthy section about micro hydro, including several case studies complete with very detailed specifications and photographs. I believe it's available online in a pdf format.
I am fascinated by this topic, it has so much potential (pardon the pun). But I'm not in a position to buy a suitable property with a year round water flow, so for now I'll have to read and daydream!

I know they are profitable or can be. There is a law in Canada that states unused power MUST be sold to the hydro company. Fortunately most people love to 'turn' a profit, pardon the pun also..
