Here's a stand-alone (similar to Cole-Parmer unit above) and it's not too costly. Not too small either.

Looks useful.

I think it would be even more useful if the sensor itself was unburied and available to fasten to a part or surface to be measured.

I'll bet that "NTC thermal resistor" is mounted up in the air off the PCB,
near some air holes in the plastic case..
And anyone with E-hacker skills could install a little socket, so the NTC resistor could be relocated out into the world..

If it's a typical NTC, longer wire resistance won't mean much error, if any..

A little more expensive, but for ultra-flexibility and portability, there are the 'iButton' sensors from Maxim: Temperature and Humidity Data Logging - Maxim

Sensor: Digikey - DS1921G

A reader/adapter is also required: Digikey - DS9490R

So, for $36.27 plus $39.45 = $75.72 (plus S&H) you get what?

Can you give us your own hands-on assessment of this unit?

In your opinion, how would this be useful to EcoRenovators?

Best,

The benefit? No wires! Tiny! (it’s the diameter of a dime by 6mm high)

I’ve only used the wired DS18B20 sensors for my solar hot water system, so sorry, only second hand experience. Some people at my office use these iButtons to monitor temperatures when doing building assessments.

Pop a few wherever you want, come back a few days/weeks/months later to collect them and upload the data to your computer. Very non-invasive. Zero set-up time. No wire running, hole drilling, etc. required. You could put these all over your house in 10 minutes.

But yes, that convenience does come with a higher price, and it’s not real time monitoring. This may not make it applicable to all Ecorenovator projects.

It seemed to fit with Xringer's desire for stand-alone portability and your request for:

Default ibuttons with WiFi??

The ibuttons look great and would solve the far flung wire problem - I wondered about the combination of an ibutton type sensor which had WiFi built in or maybe a signal output that rode on the 120v line voltage.
Then they could talk temp, pressure etc real time and wirelessly to a central logger, display or controller say on Android. You could move the sensors about as your developing project required.
But that and inexpensive might be a lot to ask!
Anyone seen such?????
