Default DIY LED backlight for LCDs

I read that newer LCD TVs and monitors have LED backlighting. It is supposed to give better colors and reduce energy consumption compared to CCFL. How big of a technological leap is it? Can a CCFL backlit LCD be retrofitted with LEDs? Is the LCD screen itself the same in both cases? If not, then can an OLED screen be retrofitted to a laptop? (This is all hypothetical, as I doubt the energy reduction would pay for itself.)
