I my quest the reduce standby energy usage I am replacing two of my DVR’s with the new energy star Genie and mini.

DIRECTV Sustainability Efforts - Energy Star Receivers, Recycling Program

They will use at least ½ the power my current DVR’s use.
(Even better I been with them a very long time so the change out will be free.)

Switch to YouTube and/or Netflix and save a bundle.

YouTube does not have the NFL package just yet.

We still have crappie slow DSL with no cable service so until that changes my options are limited.

But I am happy to get better equipment and use ½ the power. 

I bought a BELKIN Conserve Smart wireless power strip. For my bedroom TV and blu ray player. This helps save power. I also replaced my door bell with a battery operated one. No more transformer eating power 24 X 7. We are really making improvements.

Then we had my father in law moved in he is older and requires a device that helps him breath at night. It uses about 550-625 watts now my overnight power usage is back to 10-12 KW

So I am back to where I started from.

12 kwh standby
24 kwh to charge car twice week days.
36 kwh a day before we start using power.

All the power savings really did pay off because I would be using even more power if I had not done all of it. I really do not mind the new power usage. The solar is keeping up with it so far. Family is what is important in life. The kids are having fun getting to know him better.

I just thought it was ironic I was back to where I started.
