Are those outer boards full length? or multiple 2x4's patched together?

The outer studs are spliced, so they are not a single piece of lumber from foundation to rafter.

It sounds like the reason they don't use ply wood on the outside is just to save money but in alot of areas that would not pass code as you need a skin to add sheer strength to the wall, ply wood still needs a vapor barrier most of the time, altho I think you can get gaskets, caulks and tapes so you can use ply wood that has a vapor barrier rating on it, instead of having a layer of tyvek as well, but I don't see it as being a big savings.

The lack of sheathing will meet code (In MA at least) because he uses metal "let in" T bracing.
