Default What tools are needed to work on / hack a heat pump?

What do I need to hack a heat pump? I think this is a common question most people would ask when jumping into the DIY heat pump game. I know I've asked it to myself when I was tinkering with fixing some water coolers, and I still don't fully know the answer. So, I figured I'd pose the question to the experts here on the forum.

So, what do you need to hack a heat pump? What is absolutely necessary? What is nice to have? What do you look for in a micron gauge or vacuum pump? Stuff like that. I think I'll probably compile the info here and write a blog post because I think it'll be very helpful to others.
