"During winter I would disable the HRV. The utility room containing the HRV would get so cold."

Why not just add some kind of auxiliary heating to the utility room, to overcome the losses?

Maybe solar of some type?
DIY Solar Air Heating Collectors: Pop Can vs Screen Absorbers

At least you could run the HRV when it was sunny out..

I use two radon blowers to move warm attic air into my 10C basement,
when the conditions are right.

I a lot of solar hot water panels. That this year with all the cloud cover resulted in a nil investment to my heating requirement

The cold utility room was caused by air exchange unit was not compensating for the hot air being pumped out of the house. The 21 Deg. C. air was leaving and the incoming fresh air might have been lucky to enter the plenum at 0 Deg. C. As you may realize this would not be very desirable condition.

This Nilan or airxsolution looks like the thing I was thinking to build. We'll have to see how many $$$ one would need to exchange for this device. "You must always pick your battle" Buy or Build

If it's 0 deg C, into the plenum, I wonder if frost is forming.?. Messing up the air flow.?.

Imagine -21 Deg. C. air flowing through the cloraplast heat exchanger and 21 Deg. room air exiting through the same HX, even if its 100% efficient the air entering could only be 0 Deg. Burrr.

The result is that it really cools the house and the GSHPs are really working hard. We definitely need something better with regards to a HRV.

Wow.. That is a problem. Nothing like that around here.. The Atlantic keeps it mild.

Aux heating would have to be considerable. I would just shut it down when it
started to cool the room. Have it back turn on when the outside air warmed up.

I don't let my attic hot air system run unless I can get some heat gain in the basement
and not pump in any moist air..

Have you let these guys talk you out of even trying an active HRV?

These things already exist commercially.

I think that you should build at least a very small model and take some measurements.

You know I like a challenge but lets see what they cost. There is a company that makes them in Quebec Minotair. 7 & 12 kbtu.

Did you get a price on the Minotair?

We have an HRV that is not working very well. This looks like a possible fix.
Too bad they don't carry the Nilan anymore.

Well I did get a quote and was shocked. We know a mini split is about the same machine and they are priced around $1000.00 for a 12kbtu unit. Not 2000 not 3000 and no not 4000 but 4500 plus taxes and shipping WOW.
