I like how the political party that claims to be all for helping the poor hurts them so much.
Even years afterwards that helping friends find used cars I was surprised by the prices. Used to be that you could get some that will work for 1000 to 2000 now you can only get a wrecked or non working crap box for 1000 to 2000 dollars.

Put me in the minority. If I'm upgrading, I want to see the old unit disassembled and no longer functional. If I ever won the lotto I would go around buying old functional gas lawn mowers and melting them down for scrap with the idea it would push people toward newer, cleaner options.

I conserve with the $ amount saved as my main inspiration but not the only reason.
My other reasons to conserve is landfill overuse and air / water pollution caused by the manufacturing of unnecessary items , like a new car for the smiling masses every 5 years etc. , what a grossly wasteful practice.

I believe the fridge should be put out of service , the antiquated energy hog of a fridge time has past.

Why do old appliances typically end up in landfills vs. being recycled? If the old appliance ends up rotting in a landfill is that really more enviromentally responsible than leaving it in service?

The harsh reality is appliances rarely get replaced for energy saving. Most are replaced because they NEEDED one. Either the old one died or wasn't worth moving to the new place.

All metal is valuable and recycled , except for that discarded in a careless manner.

The metal scrap yards pay about $5 per appliance by weight.
landfills typically have bins for metal recycling - (these days)
