Default Last night, I felt the earth move!

Earthquake in southern Maine rattles New England but causes no immediate damage or injuries - The Washington Post

M4.0 - 6km NNE of Waterboro, Maine 2012-10-16 23:12:22 UTC

I was sitting here, reading the news on my PC, waiting for the debate to start,
when the house started shaking, my chair started bouncing and there was
a loud rushing noise, like a 747 was making a very low pass (80 ft?) over our house.

The windows were down and locked, but the shades and curtains were moving.

The noise and the shaking only lasted 6 or 8 seconds, so it took me another
5 seconds to realize we just had an earthquake!

When I was in Japan, our hotel would a shake a little during small quakes,
but what I felt last night was much bigger.

I think it was the biggest quake in the last 200 or so years around here.
I spoke was a some locals that never felt a thing.?.
My guess is their homes aren't sitting on solid granite bedrock like mine.

I looked for damage (cracked foundations etc) today, but saw none. We lucked out.

We are about 85 miles from where it occurred, so I think our local bedrock
might extend down from that region.

I know this is nothing compared to the west coast quakes, but in New England, it was a pretty big quake.
I'm waiting to see if there are going to be any noticeable after-shocks!

I just looked at a quake map of Canada
http://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.g...assidyetal.pdf
and it sure looks like both coasts aren't the best places to be..

Mid-Canada looks like the most quake free place up here in the north..
Not sure but I've heard it's pretty boring there too..

In B.C Canada we are on what is know as the Ring of Fire, same as Japan, only without the earthquakes, as of late.
On average every 500 years Vancouver Island has a large earthquake complete with tsunamis, according to the physical evidence left behind in the soil and at the ends of the inlets.
We are 60 years over due for 'the big one' now, clocks ticking.

That's scary, but I suppose it's not as risky as living near one of the big terrorist 'target' cities, like NYC,DC or LA (and maybe Boston).

In 1998 when my old company (NEC) moved out of MA to Sacramento California,
they offered to pay me the moving cost, plus a 25% pay increase.
My wife wanted no part of earthquake land! I'm also glad we stayed here..

No aftershocks here yet..
