Default Gas range solenoid

Hi everyone. In the interest of making my household more resilient in case of power failure, I'm trying to get the gas burners on my Kitchenaid range to function without electricity.

I gather that there is a solenoid in there that turns off the gas when the electricity is out.

What is the rationale here? Is this a safety feature somehow? Is there any way to circumvent this feature?
