Garbage disposal replacement
Not really energy related, but I have a garbage disposal that just went out. We don't really use it a ton, but it is nice to have. It was a 3/4hp (big sucker) insinkerator model. It appears that the seals went and the motor got wet and there is just a lot of corrosion in it. Unfortunately it doens't look repairable to me.
Anyway, I'd like to replace it probably with a smaller model 1/2hp or so. Reviews on amazon are all over the place for the insinkerator 1/2hp model. Does anyone have any info on garbage disposals? Good/bad brands, anything really.

If you are going to be sending meat and any thing that might be a bit tougher I would go one step up from the smallest disposal.

I ended up going with the same brand, easy replacement. The 1/2hp was on sale for $5 more than the 1/3rd hp so that took it for me. Its installed and running nice and quietly.

I have a 1/2hp insinkerator that I have been using for 4 years grinding apples for our cider press, because of the sound insulation they will over heat after 15 minutes, but with that sound insulation removed you can run them for hours on end if you have a cooling fan installed blowing air over the outside of the motor.
I suspect we have about 100 hours on it and it's still running quite and smooth, the stainless steel flails are key, otherwise they rust up and stop moving smoothly. A tray of ice cubes dumped down and ground up is also a great way to clean them out. |
