I didn't mean to make you nervous. My problem has arisen after 7 years of heavy use, and abuse. With proper care and maintence your system is just fine. The problems I've had result ultimately from my parent's being blind so they didn't recognize when a problem happened. I look at the KERDI type systems as probably the best practice, that however does not mean that there aren't other acceptable solutions.

Not a problem.

But sometimes, for people who are living on a really tight budget (like me), the difference of a few hundred dollars can mean the difference between being able to do a project and not being able to do a project.

I looked at Kerdi, too. It looked pretty well thought out. But when I started adding up all the elements of the system, I had to go with the older system.

On an unrelated note, I have a cousin that lives near L.A. and he has a really nice, old built-in shower, that was built before the flexible plastic shower pan membranes were available... His shower used lead sheeting, and after many decades, it starting to leak because the chemicals in the water, and soaps, and all the many bath products have gradually eaten through the lead sheeting.

Bummer...
