FYI, we normally get cold like this, but this year it's been as cold as Sunday above for over 2 weeks now. Normally we'll get that for a few days, maybe a week then it warms up a bit at least. But it's not going on to week 3 or 4 now and it's not stopping and just sitting in the -20 range. Today we actually got snow so the temperature rose to +10 with a windchill of -5, but that's only for a day, and then it's going back down. Which means I'll have to go out and shovel snow in the freezing cold tomorrow.

Costa Rica is looking better and better. Gary if you buy a house down there just let me know where it is because I'm moving in with you.

I hate the cold! We are getting some crazy weather right now..
It's going to yo-yo starting tomorrow. Last night it stayed near zero for hours.
Had to shut down my Sanyos and use back up heat.
Too much blowing snow caused them to defrost too much, and they started
power hogging at around 3deg F. Had to burn oil! (Liquid Gold).

It's 2F right now and heading for -12 in the AM.. Going to cold all stinkin night..
Big waste of fuel oil and kWh..

I've heard a lot of Cold temperature records have been set this week..



Electrical failure of the circulator pump power relay had me up most of the night..
This afternoon I ordered a replacement and hacked the control, so I could use an X10
to turn the pump on and off.. Got the setpoints programmed into my CAI controller,
and it's running pretty well. For now..
Just need to find a good spot for the living room heat sensor..

I lived in northern Indiana for two years while going to college. I remember it getting to -25F once, and that was during the day. Clear blue skys that looked like you were on Mt Everest. I pinched my nose and it wouldn't unpinch! Right then I realized why California was my state. Yesterday got to 64 degrees F here.

Well, you did get up to 28F, once in the last 30 days..

Here's a web site showing the prior 3 day weather observation for roughly where I live in Minnesota.
Of course if you are looking at this post beyond the first week or two of January it will lose the effect but if you are looking at this some time during Jan 6th or 7th you'll see some frigid figures.

We're supposed to see potentially -30f the morning of January 6th.
Wind chill factors supposed to be about -60f and they've decided to close schools so children at bus stops don't turn to popsicles waiting for the bus.

Temperatures below -25f usually hit once every 3-5 years or so if I recall correctly. Most years we hit -20f in January. Our mean temp for December was 11.7f and usually that is about where we are in January but our December has been colder than any December for at least a decade.

Last year there were a lot more low temp records set than high temp records.
I have a feeling the same thing is going to happen this winter too.

Maybe I never noticed when it was below zero back when I was still working,
just too busy to look at the weather reports most of the time.

Being retired and interested in weather patterns, I tend to notice anything that seems strange.
I might be wrong, but I think we are seeing some usually cold weather patterns.

I'll be happy when it's spring time and I can look back and see what records were broken. (If any).

I hope we don't break any snow depth records.. We had so much snow
a few years ago, we had to clean off our roofs. Mini-malls were caving in.
I've never seen so much snow on roofs during the last 50 years.

but it was so windy, it wasn't real deep on roofs exposed to the wind.

After spending Christmas holidays in Buenos Aries with a temp there of 42 Deg C. and returning home Ontario Canada to -20 Deg. C. I don't believe its good for a persons body.

This morning at about 4:00am the outside temp. was -26.8 Deg.C. (-16 Deg F.)The first order of business was to dig the 4 x 4 truck out of the snow bank. The wind with the cold and snow had buried the truck. Returning to the house after that for breakfast the digital O/S thermometer was now indicating -25.1

An indication to how cold it is this morning, the glass blocks are frosting up on the inside. Glass blocks although are a most beautiful architecture element are in no way good for an energy efficient home. Their R value is about R-3/4

I believe X-ringer is right. Winter is here.

While away the thermostats were all set-back to a floor temp of 14 Deg. even the shop floor temp. After returning the temps were raised to 28 Deg. which took about 24 hrs. in these winter conditions.

All the geo-thermal heat pumps have been purring away for the last few days keeping us nice and cozy. A nice surprize was the electric bill was lower than expected with the deep set-backs.

An even nicer thing was the home-made Geo-thermal heat-pump kept the shop floor temp at 14 Deg. C. for the time we were away preventing any frozen pipes etc. This is still the 2.5 Ton unit. I haven't rebuilt the 5 ton with the brazed plate heat exchangers yet.

Today with the bone chilling cold brings some good aspects, clear air. We may get a day of free heat via the Solar hot water panels. The winter so far has been overcast so no solar.

Hmm. Just made me think of another item for the to-do list. I should confirm the 5 Year old propylene glycol cocktail for its temperature tolerance in the solar collector.

I empathize with X-ringer having to back-up his Sanyos with Liquid Gold heat. I remember listening to the oil furnace start and wish it wouldn't run too long. The day for the tank refill was a day your heart was in your throat. WHAT WILL THE PRICE BE TODAY???

Looking at the map of the USA, it sure looks like we are getting a real winter!

Of course we can see where all that cold is coming from! Canada is sending it down!!

That creeping -20 to -30 is only 200 miles from MA now!!
