Hi xRinger, we just got ourselves one of those too. I can say they are efficient indeed and it looks different. We got one from LG. Samsung offers a similar looking one but is more expensive. I know you'll have more choices there than what we got here.

It would be a good thing to research... or at least look into the source paper, rather than just the article.

But, why fret about the personal cost of charging an iPhone if your TV is a plasma room heater, or if your old refrig is using 2x or more electricity than it should, or if you drive a SUV, that drinks gasoline, or if your house is so poorly insulated that it is a burden to heat and cool?

Seems like a matter of worrying about pennies when you're throwing away fifty dollar bills.

But then as Daox indicated, it's the server farms that are the real problem,
and there is a price for everything we do. It's a good idea to look into what the real costs, the cost to us personally and also the broader ecological and historical costs, really are. For how long will the life systems of the planet actually be able to bear the eco-burden of a high-tech world?

Another angle is that the source paper, "The Cloud Begins With Coal", could actually be a info-ganda piece encouraged by coal companies [NOTE: the source paper is actually sponsored by: National Mining Association and The American Coalition for Clean Coal] (Note 2: there is no such thing as 'clean coal', the phrase is a cute alliterative slogan coined by coal industry lobbying groups), to impress us with just how much we need coal, and should stay silent about all of the environmental consequences that issue from that.

However, the US has been moving to natural gas (CH4) instead of the carbon-laden burning of coal. But then, to support natural gas, corporate power has decided to put its shoulder behind fracking, which promises to poison our birthright of pure water in our aquifers. Fracking may even dwarf harm done by coal mining/burning.

(* Gasland II is definitely worth seeing *)

But in the entirety of this, we all need to become aware of the damage we are causing, quite mindlessly, and that we need to become conscious of our choices.

I think that living local and using less is the real answer.

I hope these batteries don't wear out too fast, being re-charged so often.
The shallower the discharge, the better the batteries will fare. I had two sets of NiMH AA batteries that I would switch into my Walkman (remember those?) at lunchtime to keep the discharge cycles reasonable. Those two pair of batteries went two whole years, 500 charge/discharge cycles. Then my job changed and I got a Sansa Fuze.

I did a quick scan of the LGs at the Lowes and HD sites.
They are Energy Star, but the prices are a bit on the high side.
Next time I have my wife with me at one of the larger stores,
we'll have to scout out the LGs. Might be worth it, if we can
retire the little basement freezer.
I think one of our problems is my wife's need to freeze bread
and other baked goods, that take up a lot of space.
We always have two weeks worth of bread on hand.
I guess it's just in case we can't get to the store.?.

Maybe we need one of those bread making machines?

I'm using some solder-tab NiMH AA cells (2,000 mAh?) in my Norelco razor.
It's very old and the ni-cads died a couple years ago.
So, I'm trying the shallow discharge thing with these. So far, so good.

The Prius C uses NiMH, and I wish my wife could do a little shallow discharge too.
The other week, she forgot to turn it off (in park) overnight.
I don't think it ran the IC engine (no smell in the garage),
but the pack indicator was at one bar when I wanted to go to the movies.

You know, that's one more good reason for having a detached garage.

I'm now charging everything up every 2 weeks now. (PC reminder app).

My LG 840G (Tracfone) is only turned on when I'm out somewhere,
so every 14 days should work for it. My Kindle Fire is only on when
I'm reading an eBook, which is really low usage..
The story I'm reading now is boring, thus easy on the battery..

I've been thinking of getting one of those Moultrie M-880 8MP Game Cameras.
Want to get some wildlife pics and maybe use for security cam too.

But, it uses eight AA cells! However, it does have a 12V aux input!
So, I could run it off the solar reading lamp rig. (big car battery)..
Maybe even get it to run an Eye-Fi SD card too..

I Solar charge station could charge all battery operated devices provide emergency power for lighting and if big enough power the Router full time. The little stuff adds up especially if you have a lot of stuff..

Just in case anyone doesn't know, I started this thread as a dumb joke..

My iPhone 4 sends 50% of it's life on the charger.
Since I use it to listen to podcast and talk radio,
Mark Levin Show - Podcasts
watch YouTube videos, & check Email etc..

I plug it in over-night, almost every night!

May as well use the power while it's still cheap (17 cents per kWh), since it's not going to get any cheaper..
Unless the Chinese sell us some sweet LFTR reactors!!
Local view: We can
