Ouch. Ya, I don't think there's anything you can do about the December electricity/gas sucking month. Unless of course you just decide to skip the holiday festivities altogether, which I doubt you are...all that Christmasy foody goodness.

Did you bought a wattmeter ?

I'm measuring everything by now and I found the source of a constant 50W consumption. I have a few strips to measure and then I'll be able to do a 2nd hypowatting round but not sure how much I'll be able to save. More about that in a few days...

About the Xmas festivities, at least having more people at home save a little heating

Denis.

I did get the KillAWatt for Christmas, haven't really used it yet. The power hog (my entertainment center) is difficult to get behind, and I have to be ready to unplug it all and lose some settings.

On Christmas morning, my thermo was set for 71, then with 11 people in the house, it hit 78, but also didn't help I had the stove on for hours.

Yikes, those are pretty big numbers. You got me beat on electricity, but I got you beat on gas usage for December. I really gotta post my numbers, I forgot all about it. All I remember is I used 160 therms.

what bugs me most is the number of days. last month was a 29 day bill, this one is 34.

our monthly budget for Gas/Elec is $325. Anything under gets banked, or is usually used to go towards things to help reduce the bill even more... but yea, since it was 34 days ($9.67/day) it's over budget by $3.80. I honestly don't care, luckily we don't live paycheck to paycheck, but it's crazy that they can't even out the months a bit more. We actually have $500 set aside just in case we get a ridiculous bill (probably like $450+) one month by surprise.

This should be our worse month of the year, and it should start going back down.

I hope so for you, but by here the coldest month is February, as he hotter is August.

We got only 2 freezing mornings by now, but next 3 days are forecasted as freezing days with snow...

Got behind my entertainment center and plugged in the killawatt.

Started at ~72 Watts constant.

-42" Plasma TV
-Surround Sound Receiver
-Surround Sound Amplifier
-MiniDisc
-Record Player
-160gb DVR/DVD Player with a fan constantly running
-Comcast HD DVR
-VCR
-Wireless Ipod Dock
-XBOX
-PS2
-Wii
-VOIP Phone modem
-VOIP Phone

Unplugged DVR/DVD player, record player, minidisc, VCR, PS2, Wii. Got it down to 46 Watts constant.

That DVR/DVD player is a HOG. 20 watts on standby.

My normal TV watching is TV, surround sound & a DVR.
With the DVR/DVD player it's 400 watts
With the comcast DVR it's 350 watts

I love toys like the killawatt.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. The heating and cooling degree days are right on my bill. I don't count them.

So as much as I was praising the Comcast DVR for being better than my Toshiba DVR/DVD player power wise, I couldn't figure out where 40 watts was coming from. Turns out the Comcast one takes 40watts on standby and like 42-45 on. Verses 20watts standby, 70 watts on. My TV is only 1-2 watts in standby. Yay Vizio.
