Electric riding mower

Hey all I am new here and am excited to start my first project. I want do electify my old Murray hydrostatic drive mower, but I am having a hard time finding a reasonable motor. I live in NJ any place here I should be looking?

Welcome to the site Doug!

Its good to see another mower conversion.

You are going to have to open up the yellowpages (or go to their website) and start calling places. For used motors, I'd call forklift repair places, golf cart shops, salvage yards/recyclers (asking about forklifts and floor cleaners) and motor rebuild shops. I would also keep an eye on craigslist for anyone getting rid of forklifts or golf carts. If you are looking for something new, a search online will quickly find what you need.

Thanks for the welcome I will do as you suggest. New is out as I cant afford 500+ $.

You could also look for certain old generator heads, as they're usually single phase and don't require inductive capacitors to start.

hey all, new to this site and glad to have found it... i know a few things about converting ride on mowers so i would like to try and help you with places i deal with... surpluscenter is a good place for dc motors.. you may want to check their whole site out for parts.. you will find that your project can be fun to build and even more fun to ride around with while you put it to work.. i had done three of them but they are just a work horse and for the kids and me to ride around on... these are them.. if you have any questions i would be happy to answer them if i can.. good luck
