HVAC transformer pulls about 10W in standby. 12VDC will drive most HVAC relays, but 24V is still needed for the furnace board. 86KWH per year (about $10) is what is at stake. Doorbell is about $3/yr. if you have to replace batteries less than once per year, your ahead of the game. Payback time will be LONG unless you have to buy a doorbell anyway.
