CNR-9100 5.6V power supply

I have a couple of old CNR-9100 cellphone chargers.

They are very light (no 60hz transformer) and dissipate little or no heat when in use.
Since these seem to be chopper supplies, I'm wondering if they might be able to run off of 115 to 144 VDC??
(Output from my Canadian Solar array).

Any guesses? Smoke or clean 5.6vdc power??

I'm no expert, but I believe that switching power supplies can utilize DC as well as AC. Like you said, there is no transformer in it that requires AC to function. If you have a few I'd just give it a shot.

140V may be a bit high though...

When the sun comes out again, I'll rig up a socket so I can hook one up.

If it works, I might use try to find some with higher output voltage,
and use them to power some of the devices that I want to use on my
hot water heater-assist system.

So, instead of trying to make a 15v Zeiner(Z3) power supply for this circuit,
I could design it for 144 volts and use a 12v or 15v chopper supply.

Here's a 12volter from China..

Input:100-240V AC 50/60 Hz
Output: 12V DC 1A (1000mA)

Sure looks like it might run on a wide range of PV source voltages..

Last week I tested the CNR-9100 using 57 vdc and it seemed to work fine.
The 12V Chinese supply also worked without a problem.

Maybe this week, I'll stick them on the 144 vdc from the PV..

See if they smoke..
