Default green woodshed roof

I just finished, aside from planting, what will hopefully become a green roof over the firewood pile. Instead of the recommended (and expensive!) lava rock growing medium I'm trying free mulch. We'll see what happens. It's getting late in the season for planting but the sedums are on order.

Nice work! Are the black boxes bat houses? And the cut-out on the corner there, what is that for?

You say you are using mulch as a growing medium, have you sized your rafters for the wet weight? Mulch gets remarkably heavy when waterlogged. Looks like a very interesting project, I would love to see how it grows and holds out over a winter.

Very interesting. What made you want to go with a green roof?

They are indeed bat houses. I posted about them here:

The cut out corner is to allow light through to the honeysuckle climbing the bat house tower.
The weight of wet mulch doesn't concern me near as much as the 3' of wet snow that's likely to be there a few months from now :-0 I'm crossing my fingers.

And the green roof was an afterthought. I'd originally planned to roof with steel but now that we're beekeepers it's all about the bees so plants it is.

You've had this roof up for about a month or so. How is it working out?

So far so good. We've had some torrential rain lately and there's been no issues with the roof. I thought the mulch might migrate downslope but so far it's staying put. I've got a temporary hose hooked up to the roof drain and am routing the water out into the yard. I'll be hooking up a collection barrel to harvest the rainwater when time permits.

Cheers, Greg
