It's worth considering the background heat in the home. I did a $100 hack on the laundry closet that captures the heat of condensation from a condensing clothes dryer. I mounted a bipole light switch wired as A/B along with a snap disk thermostat on the closet ceiling. Forward in the summer vents it through an ERV. Back in the winter vents the closet into the bathroom using a through-wall fan. The condensing dryer itself is a major energy saver in my super-tight house.

Someone here should hack a heat-pump clothes dryer. Just sayin.

To beat the dryer losses can dry the laundry using a dehumidifier then to soften fluff for 5 minutes in the dryer. Often I hang the heavier cloths then fluff them for a few minutes when dry. A 2nd reason to hang dry is does not shrink cloths.

I've never had anything shrink in the dryer and I dry everything. ..although seeing the lint in the filter is a clear indication that the clothes are losing material and will wear out sooner in the process.

Nothing shrinks for you in the dryer ?

I find that bizarre as EVERYTHING shrinks for me in the dryer especially jeans

I do not put jeans in the dryer unless I have lost weight as they get too tight

I came across a pdf that staes a 30% improvement in a ASHP COP can be realized by pre conditioning the air.

PDF is on a big system requiring 3600 CFM in fan power pushing air through three 8 inch pipes buried 5 feet deep

I don't know if this has been mentioned here on ER, but I am hoping we see an ultrasonic dryer, in the near future. GE was supposed to be working on this.
