Default 3 way pull chain light switch in lieu of dimmer

I tried to find a link explaining this better but Ive had no such luck. Dimmable cfl were once hard to come by and their adjustments were usually pretty coarse. Plus if you have only one wall switch powering both fan and light you can't use a dimmer on the motor.
A local fixture shop turned me on to these a few years back. You can do this with any multiple bulb ceiling fan light kit. Lets say you have a 3 light kit. First pull one bulb comes on. 2nd pull 2 bulbs light. 3rd pull all bulbs light. 4th off.
Westinghouse 77052 3 Way Fan Light Switch With Pull Chain 3 Wire (030721770524,2) at HardwareAndTools.com
It wires black to hot, red to 1 bulb, blue to 2 ( or more) bulbs.
